I slept in the airport because my plane was really early in the morning and there won't be any transports to take me there... A lot of people had already grabbed the sofas and chairs, but luckily the domestic flights part of the airport in Tokyo has a big very big canteen and I could sleep over 3 chairs...
But because it was really uncomfortable, I decided to eat my breakfast at 05:30am (as the udon shop opened!!) and then flew to Kagoshima.
Kagoshima is right at the south of Kyushu and my graduation plan was to use a whole month to visit most places of Kyushu.
Kagoshima is also a special place for me because it wasn't Tokyo, Osaka.. that I went, for the first time of Japan. Instead, it was Kagoshima.!
I met my lovely Host Family again, and we went to have lunch, visit the Kagoshima Aquarium and had dessert!
I guess this is very popular among the locals because we had to queue up to buy these! This shops sells shaved ices with lots of different flavours. Of course, I chose milk of out it.
I didn't take a lot of photo while I was with them because I was too happy to see them and forgot I had to take photos ><. Our gathering ended with Ramen in this special night food corner.
Eating Ramen!!
Each place in Kyushu has a different taste to their ramen, so I swore to myself that I have to try them all!!
I came back to this place after picking up my friend from Kagoshima Centre station.
As it was quite late at night, we didn't eat much. Instead, we ordered some drinks that looks like cocktail but had no alcohol in it and some salad sticks.
The bartender told us that this shop's style of food is from an island further south than Kagoshima. And it is quite hard to try the food there because only ferries go there. So I guess we are lucky that we didn't have to go all the way there to try it!
Then we went back to hostel. The hostel we stayed in was very very cheap and it was only a few minutes away from the central station. It was only 1700 yen per night! (Name:Hostel 鹿児島リトルアジアGuest House) http://www.jalan.net/yad354895/?contHideFlg=1&vos=djalrmgmz10070600100&rootCd=58
It's a guest house with kitchen so you can cook. Plus, you can use the computer and living room there. You can meet new friends from all different part of the world!
We had always wondered why Japanese fruits are sold at such high price, so we went to one of the local supermarket and bought one back.
It was very juicy and quite sweet! Although it's not the very sweet type that was grown inside green house, which would have costed us a fortune to buy one.
Now let me start to introduce you the food we ate for the next day!
I started my day with this soba breakfast which is located at the underground floor of the central mall next to the central station.
Then we went to visit the shopping street by this local rail.
Out of all the Japanese shopping streets, I have to say that this is my favourite.
Because there are many dessert shops, street food, clothes shop and not just pharmacies.
Plus there are lots of sales comparing to the cities.
More importantly, it's not always crowded with people!!
It only took us less than 10 mins to arrive! (it was just a straight line, so you can actually walk there!)
After shopping we sat down to eat shaved ice in this famous tenmonkan mujyaki cafe (http://mujyaki.co.jp/). In Kagoshima, if you ask what are the famous food, the people would surely recommend you to shiro kuma (which means white bear) for dessert. This name was taken from the milk flavoured shaved ice looking like polar bear.
720 yen for a shiro kuma.
Green tea 720yen; Puddling white bear 825 yen |
Now that the century has evolved, there is also yellow bear (mango), green bear (green tea) etc.
Actually it was like Korean shaved ice. But I couldn't taste the difference between different shaved ice cos it was freezing my tongue after a few spoonfuls.
We really should have ordered only one because it's very filling!!!
This restaurant has 4 floors and each floor sells different things. If you are planning to eat lunch, then maybe you can try 2nd floor which sells Japanese styled western food. The underground B1 floor sells Teppanyaki (food being grilled on iron plate) and the 4th floor sells Japanese food.
When we were shopping for souvenir shops, there was this Black pork rice roll. Black pork is particularly famous in Kagoshima!! Therefore, it's one of the must try. But I found this onigiri (which means hand-squeezed rice roll) that can be preserved for quite a while!!
It looks like this when you opened it. Then you put it in microwave to cook it.
It's using black pork to wrap around the rice and it was flavoured with meat sauce. I had to say it was quite special and the rice was quite yummy but I prefer grilled black pork on its own or shabushabu (hot pot).
Again... mitarashi dango (rice ball with sweet sauce) I swear I had to eat it every time I see it. And! It was sold in the central shopping mall, so it was inevitable that I bought it....
Please stay tuned for the next entry for the rest of the food we ate!! There will be black pork shabushabu, grilled kagoshima beef and also Kagoshima Ramen!!
